Our plans to hit a certain city park on our "day off" were foiled by a practice parade. The route we needed to take to get to the park was blocked completely from street traffic. We thought it was because of a parade that was already scheduled. There was a literal army of uniformed young people, a heavy military presence, and many other tale-tell signs that something big was about to happen.
A taxi driver told us after the fact that this was just a rehearsal for their independence day parade which isn’t until August 8th! They must take their parades pretty seriously here in Singapore. They even had helicopters, what I deemed the Singapore "Blue Angels" fly over in their F-16s, and a few ancient looking sailing vessels. All for a dress rehearsal for a parade that won’t even happen until a month from now…wacky, isn’t it?
Fortunately, we were able to see some good Asian choreography as a consolation prize.
