I know you’re all wondering what we’re learning here in sunny / rainy Singapore. What’s a typical day like for us? What are the training sessions like? What are we doing between mango smoothie consumption and Malaysian dance routines?
Among other things we’ve had one medical interview with the international medical director. At this meeting we discovered we have a few remaining immunizations yet to receive as a family (and I thought we were immunized against everything except jetlag at this point.) We also discovered that we needed to get blood drawn to determine if the Hepatitus B vaccination we received in the States actually worked. Good to know, good to know. I guess the medical community in the US has a different opinion from other countries about checking the validity of their immunizations.
We actually have also learned quite a bit about malaria and some effective methods for avoiding mosquito bites. I guess Singapore is pretty serious about malaria. We were told that businesses and other institutions are required by law to fumigate their property against mosquitoes. In fact, we were told that if an institution has any standing water on its property that is deeper than a Singapore dime, they will be fined by the government! I’m told the government actually checks on this. I guess it takes only a little water to produce the right environment for mosquito breeding… Who knew?
Tonight, while vigilantly standing guard against any mosquito threat, I watched the All-Star Home Run Derby on ESPN from our hotel room. I’ve only been gone a week and I already was getting a bit nostalgic for America’s game (which I thoroughly loathed until only 4 years ago…) Yeah, I know I’m a bit weird. Thanks for noticing.
