Well, this is primarily where we eat all our lunches. If we were living on-site (as most folks being oriented would) we would probably eat nearly all of our meals here. Instead, we have breakfast and dinner at the cafe at the Y.
Notice, this dining room does not have aircon.
If you want to be in the in-crowd here in Singapore, I think using this term, aircon, is one crucial step towards being hip. If you don’t abbreviate and say air-conditioning OR if you abbreviate too much and say AC you just won’t get the required result. But on the other hand if you say aircon, you know you’ll get some approving nods from Singaporeans. You’re beginning to find your way around this city-country-island.
All the buses and taxis I’ve been in here have had aircon. I’m told that there are waiting areas within the Singapore Zoo called Cool Spots that are aircon-equipped (just in case you find you are glistening a bit too much). And obviously all the major hotels, shopping centers, grocery stores, subways, and other in-door facilities have aircon. It’s a marvelous thing. Being from south Florida, I can tell you that they have not yet reached the scope of Singapore in keeping most controllable environments as cool as possible.
Addendum: We journeyed back to the Calvary Chapel church today…and only 10 minutes late this time! There were no aircon enclosed areas from the time we stepped off the bus until the time we hit the subway (and vice versa). The result: I was slathered in sweat by the time we arrived home. I lost track of how many times I showered today.
