The outer perimeter of the monastery is called the kora (mispelled?).  These prayer wheels line the outside of the area.  The devout will grab each "prayer" wheel and give it a spin as they round the kora. 

It took my friend Bill and I forty-five minutes to circumnavigate the kora, and we weren’t spinning any wheels.  (But we were praying though…)
