I think this is pretty cool how willing my kids are to try new things when it comes to eating. Most parents wrestle with their kids trying to get them to eat a bit of broccoli or green beans, but (as we have witnessed) Anna is not afraid to eat new (often bizarre) things. For example, in the past she has enjoyed tripe (sp?) i.e. pig intestines and chicken feet. Her latest eating "feat" was scarfing down quite a few whole fried fish (as seen in this picture.)
This past Sunday, Christa’s friend Li-Juan invited us over for an authentic Chinese meal and one of the main dishes were deep fried "yu" (pronounced: yoo) i.e. fish. These were not the actual fish (pictured,) but they looked very similar (heads and all). The fish were deep-fried to the point that the bones were soft (other than a few I found.) Anna munched on them like they were Doritos.
Sarah, on the other hand, not only wouldn’t eat the fish at first, but was actually afraid of them. She kept flinching when we offered her some. By the end of the evening Sarah actually did try to eat the fish but she always asked us to, "Take the fish off! Take the fish off!" By this she of course meant the fish heads. Thankfully, we were not required to eat the fish heads.
The girls also enjoyed the yang rou (mutton) that was offered as well as the other vegetables.
Li-Juan’s parents, who prepared the meal, were very impressed when Anna spoke in Chinese. They even commented on how good it sounded. By all non-verbal appearances, they were less impressed when I spoke in Chinese (if they understood me at all…) Thankfully, Li-Juan speaks excellent English and Chinese and could translate for us. We had a really good time and gained a little more insight into Chinese life and culture. We were also very proud of our girls. Even staying up way past their normal bedtime they behaved very well.
