Do you have any favorite foods that you would call inexplicable?
It’s a strange question. Let me rephrase:
Sometimes in life you get used to eating certain things–a certain brand of peanut-butter, a certain type of cereal, or even a typical recipe your mother used to make. After an extended period of time of eating this certain thing, you get used to (and often prefer) the taste of it–even though other palates might find it disgusting. Maybe it’s the Safeway generic brand of Coca-cola or maybe it’s grandma’s home-made chicken n’ dumpling fritters. Whatever it is, it does the trick for you. And if you had to choose between this familiar food and let’s say a delicious, gourmet equivalent you would ALWAYS choose the old standby.
For me, one of my "familiar" favorites is Dinty Moore Beef Stew. I know what you’re thinking.

That’s disgusting! That stuff looks like dog food! It even comes in a can.
But that’s why I say that this is a favorite food of mine that I find completely inexplicable. I literally cannot explain why I like it OR why I would prefer it over a fresh pot of home-made beef stew prepared by the great Wolfgang Puck himself.
I guess I just ate a lot of it growing up and in college and it’s familiar. It just grew on me.
My friend Josh, excellent wing-man that he is, brought me a few cans of the Dint all the way from Seattle…so tonight I’ll be feasting on nuked beef stew–alas, tis the bachelor’s way. And I will enjoy it!
So, how about you? What’s your favored yet inexplicable food?
