modern psalms

·

As you can see I’ve been on a bit of a Delirious? kick lately with my music listening.

I think I speak for the whole family when I say the last few weeks have been a somewhat emotional time in our cross-cultural journey.  It almost feels like a second wave of culture shock.  There is no real explanation for it–it just is.  (There’s no need for alarm, but prayer is always appreciated.)  The reason I mention all this is that I often find that, much like reading the Psalms, listening to Delirious? songs help me grapple with the emotional aspects of this oft difficult journey of faith.  Delirious?, at their best, touches on the soul’s core issues and helps me to re-align my feelings with His kingdom reality.  Plus, they have a nice sound (if you’re into that sort of thing.)

Anyway, that’s a long introduction.  If you have the album called The Mission Bell, you should give this song (Take Off My Shoes) another listen.  I’ve been listening to it often lately.  If you don’t have the album (which by the way is not one of my favorites of theirs), you can read the lyrics below:

Take Off My Shoes

I’ll take off my shoes, I’m coming in,
Untie this rope, I’m staying with him,

Love of my life, I’ll live and die,

Just for the moments for my king and I.

Why did you call, why did you wait,

For someone so guilty, someone so fake.

There are no words for my beautiful song,

Now I’m in the arms of my beautiful one.

Hold me, blow all the pride from my bones,

With your fire.

Hold me, breathe on this heart made of stone,

Keep it pure.

Hold me, saviour of heaven and earth,

King forever.

Hold me, love of my life lead me on,

Through the fire, lead me on…

I’ll take off this crown and fall at your feet,

The secret of joy are the moments we meet.

How could a man with all of your fame,

Pull me from darkness and call me by name.

So hold me today, as I carry your cross,

Into the desert to find who is lost.

Look at my hands, they’re still full of faith,

God keep them clean till we finish the race.

One response to “modern psalms”

  1. I don’t have the music but I love the words. You’ll always be walking a faith walk sometimes easier and sometimes harder. But many call you blessed and brave. I call you humble and honest. To let your feelings out there and share with people is a hard thing to do. There will come a day and you will look back with the pride had when he told of all his troubles, but he said not to boast in me, but to boast and honor God. You stand at that thresh hold, and I have faith in you both that you will make Him proud. God bless you. MER
