The Christa Report

·

Hi everyone.  I just want to say THANKS TO ONE AND ALL who have been praying for Christa the past few days.  I got a call from her from Hong Kong this afternoon and here’s the latest news:

  • Last night Christa had a wonderful night’s sleep.  She said it was a "miracle" and I can attest to this for a few reasons.  a.) Christa doesn’t sleep well in new places, b.) Christa has been in pain and uncomfortable for the last week and barely slept at all since this pain started, c.) I know people have been praying because you/they have said so.  This "good night’s sleep" was an answered prayer and a blessing.
  • Christa met with the doctor there in Hong Kong.  They ran some diagnostic tests and bloodwork and took a look at the area of Christa’s lower abdomen (via ultrasound??) where she has been experiencing the pain.
  • The diagnosis is still uncertain, but the test results will be available on Wednesday afternoon when Christa has her follow-up exam.
  • The doctor prescribed some antibiotics (not the same ones that were prescribed here in Xining thankfully!) in order to fight a possible infection where the doctor noticed some internal swelling. (It was difficult for the doctor to know if/how much swelling there was because she had no basis of comparison, i.e. previous x-rays, ultrasounds, etc.)
  • Christa seemed upbeat and had noticed an improvement (even before her appointment) in the amount of pain she was experiencing (but it is still constant).  The medication she is now taking could take care of the problem, but it remains to be seen…  The tests should tell us more.
  • In the meantime, while waiting for her test results on Wednesday afternoon, Christa will have the opportunity to see some of Hong Kong, drink Starbucks coffee, and do some shopping (well, as long as she is feeling OK that is!)  It’s not exactly a vacation, but I’m hoping she will get a little downtime down south while figuring this thing out.
  • The earliest she would be back here in Xining is Thursday (sometime) but that remains to be seen.
  • Meanwhile, I found out today they are supposed to cut our electricity for a FEW days (AGAIN!) just to make my Mr. Mom experience all the more interesting…

That’s about all for now.  I’ll keep the updates coming.  Thank you SO MUCH for standing with us in prayer at this time.  We really appreciate it…

  1. So thankful to hear the good report! Why do they shut your electric off? Just curious.

  2. vicki: about the electric shut-offs, my best guess as to why is…

    it’s on a whim!

the last time they shut them off they had to replace the electric poles on the main road by our house. that was a unique situation and understandable.

this time, who knows? i’ve found that when the city or the apartment complex needs to do any kind of work on water pipes or electric lines, they typically will shut it down for everyone EVEN IF it only effects one apartment or street. i’m thinking maybe they haven’t built their resources in a way that allows them to localize problems to be fixed without impacting a large % of people.

i also noticed they were digging small trenches in our complex and laying electric lines. i also saw that there were some new light posts that some workers were positioning outside. then these things disappeared. what’s ironic about this is that people here are hyper-conservative about using electricity. they don’t use much in the way of lighting their homes. so at night you can always tell where the foreigner lives by how well-lit the apartment windows are.

therefore, i am afraid they will shut off our electricity for 2 days or more to put in light poles that they will not turn on because of the cost!

it wouldn’t be so bad, but we opted for the electric stove instead of gas. bad decision. (not that i am much of a cook though.) it’s not having the internet that really kills me though…(although i guess dial up is an option if you have a few hours to check one email.) oh yeah, i guess i do miss my coffee pot and the hot water in my shower as well…oh the luxuries…

not that i’m complaining! at least we have electricity. talk to emily tanner sometime abobut that!

  3. Hey! We (mostly Nicole, Eliot, and I, although who knows how 5 month old minds work?) pray for you guys every night, and I’ll add this concern to our parish’s prayer list on Sunday.

  4. thanks, pete. we appreciate it.

i’m glad that taylor’s surgery went so well. these last few weeks have been crazy and i haven’t been able to comment on that, but i’ve seen his website (and passed it along to my mom, who was asking about him) hope you guys are hanging in there! i felt like two was much more challenging than one, but also has new complexities of joy, too.

anna always reminds me (usually AS i’m praying for her) “don’t forget taylor…” it’s pretty cute. it will be fun when they meet some day. stay warm…

  5. I feel like such a schmuck. I haven’t checked your blog in awhile, so I was surprised to see what has transpired. I will definitely be praying for a good recovery.
