When you live overseas immunizations become a way of life. Our family of four have a battery of shots we have to keep up to date on in order to avoid getting some pretty nasty illnesses. Each of us has a little yellow card which we use to document which shots and boosters we’ve received and when.
Since Thailand is a convenient and inexpensive place to get shots, we tend to get our updates every year when we come through. So yesterday we took the familiar trip to the hospital by the mall here in Chiang Mai.
Shot Count:
Christa: 4
Anna: 3
Todd: 2
Sarah: 1
Anna was the super-trooper of the day. Not only did she have her first-ever teeth-cleaning at the dentist–which she endured with flying colors bordering on joy–but she also got three shots in the arm AND DIDN’T CRY at all. She even admitted that she liked getting shots (which I think is a little over the top, but sure beats the opposite.) At one point when the nurse stuck a needle in Anna’s arm that looked about as long as the thickness of her small bicep, I told Anna, "See, it just tickles a little…" and she actually started giggling. Amazing kid! I think I was closer to crying getting mine than she ever was.
Sarah, on the other hand, did not enjoy her single shot nearly as much. Kicking, screaming, crying, and swearing oaths against getting shots the rest of the day. Can’t really blame her. Who wants to get shots?
But I’ll take a few shots over Dingy fever any day.
