nouwen on leadership & hope – 2

From The Wounded Healer we are seeking to answer the question, "What is a Christian leader?":

A Christian leader is a [hu]man of hope whose strength in the final analysis is based neither on self-confidence derived from his personality, nor on specific expectations for the future, but on a promise given to him.

This promise not only made Abraham travel to unknown territory, it not only inspired Moses to lead his people out of slavery; it is also the guiding motive for any Christian who keeps pointing to new life even in the face of corruption and death.

So what are the promises given to us?  What are the promises He’s given to me that keep me moving into "unknown territory" and away from the slavery of "corruption and death"?  I feel like having specific expectations from life is infused into the very fabric of our modern being.  Are we, like those referenced in the legendary Faith chapter of Hebrews, willing to pursue a far-off dream that we will never see fulfilled in this life?  It’s not as easy as it may sound…

Just ask Moses.
