night life

·

Last week, we attended a benefit show at the local coffee bar that we’ve been to a few times.  That last sentence requires a disclaimer.  It’s called a coffee bar, but they don’t actually serve coffee there.  It is slated as an "English corner" for people to practice their English with "foreigners" like me.  The first time I went though I actually practiced my Chinese more than I spoke English.  It also is called a "bar" but children are welcome and no form of alcohol is served.  Our girls have really enjoyed it the few times we’ve gone.  They get to stay up late since we preemptively give them a nap.

Anyway, this benefit show involved various musical numbers by both local and foreign performers.  The cover charge and donations raised will go towards assisting some local Tibetan orphans with their various living expenses and education costs.  It was a good cause and a good show.  I had to refrain from "slam-dancing" at one point; I guess I was a bit nostalgic for the days when I actually used to go to concerts like this in cramped venues.

Here’s a few pictures from the event…

  1. Fun times in Xining…

  2. it was GREAT to see these pics and hear more about things that are happening in Xining! Makes me homesick…
I’m so proud of these guys and wish I could have been there!

  3. Hey man,
I like your blog. Ive only read a few articles but so far its really cool. I also think that our interests are similar. Hornby and Coupland are my favorite authors, although Coupland’s “Jpod” is total trash. Elliott Smith is great, along with pretty much every other musician you like. It’s also nice to see that you are feeding Bill some good tunes to listen to. He needs it. Anyways, I have a typepad as well check it out at:

Hey! I just got back home from Xining on the 7th! What are you doing there? I was on a Culture exchange at the East Campus of the Qinghai Nationalities University. I totally know what you mean when you mention those things… Makes me miss Xining so much…

By the way… When you were at English Corner, and the foreign people were singing, (this is a long shot, but) was there a blond girl singing with a guitar a few times? I think that might have been me…

  6. brett: thanks for the props. i’m glad my musical and literary taste resonates as well. i’m thankful to my friends back home who keep me well-stocked on good tunes and good reads.

thanks for introducing me to your blog. i can keep better track of you that way…later.
