so far, so good…for aliens

This is a welcome sight:

In case you can’t tell by this blurry picture, it’s my work
permit.  I got it a few days ago to the tune of about $67 for one
year, whereas it used to be about $40 for 3 years.  BUT the important thing is that I, and my family, have been permitted to work in China this year, specifically, here in Jianzha.  Thanks so much for all the thought on this matter.  It’s not a done deal just yet, but we’re a lot farther along in the process now that I have this document and paperwork.  Now it should be just a formality.

Tuesday we’ll be heading to a city further south by two hours to get the visas for our family.  Then, maybe we can settle down and actually start work at the library.  The girls need to start home-schooling soon for sure.

But I have to admit, I am a little offended by the term "alien".  I mean, who likes being called an alien?  Well, maybe he does.

  1. There have been many time we all thought you were a bit alien. Congratulations. NOW GET TO WORK!

    How do you pronounce Jianzha?

  2. The easiest way (without that whole tone thing) is “gin-jah”. Gin like the liquor, and jaw said with a Jamaican accent. The tones are both first tone if that makes a difference. Half the time when I say it to Chinese people they don’t know what I’m saying. Welcome to my world!

  3. Hey I’m with Kathy, you are a bit alien, but in a good way. Congratulations. I’m praying things will go alot smoother from here on in. We are happy for you. Oh I meant to tell you the pictures have been great. MER

  4. A hearty congratulations on your alien status!

  5. Yeah! A huge relief indeed. Blessings on all of you.

  6. update: yesterday I road a bus for two hours to go to get our visas. the lady in the office collected all of my documents and began to process our visas (residence permit). she asked that we come back in 3 days to pick them up. we were hoping to get them the same day, but this is the way these things work often. i paid the money and got my receipt. so, unless there is some other unpredictable obstacle, we should have our visas by the weekend. it was difficult to get to the city where the visas are processed however because we have had so much rain which has caused many landslides on the hilly mountainous roads between our city and the other city. i had to wait 1.5 hours on the road home while front-loaders were clearing the road of rock and debris. we’ll see how soon we can get our passports back!
thanks for keeping up-to-date on this process with us. we appreciate it.
