out-back climb

·

I finally decided I needed to climb this one.   It’s always staring at me from our back yard so I hiked it a few days ago.

It wasn’t nearly as bad as it looks from down below.  It took about 45 minutes to reach the top.  Probably more of a "hill" out here than a mountain, but I was breathing heavy nonetheless.  As I was sitting in the shadow of those prayer flags on top, I  was feeling pretty proud of myself until a few Tibetan girls under the age of 10 summited from the other much more difficult face, one carrying a large basket on her back.  They probably ran it in 10 minutes or something…

Some of the wildlife I observed on the hike:

  • lots of goats all over
  • some cows grazing near the base of the hill
  • a strange variety of grasshopper with a scarlet-red body; these things could fly long distances and made the loudest ticking sounds.
  • a lizard!  Yeah, that was crazy.  It was about 3.5 inches long.
  • butterflies
  • wasps; they must have quite a hive built in that mound of prayer flags.  I was thinking there’s no way they will be around in a month’s time when the temperature drops.

Next time, I’ll bring my camera on the hike with me.

  1. beautiful country, we are looking forward to seeing it. How high was that hill?MER

  2. I’d like to see one of those grasshoppers…

  3. Hey Todd,

I have been thinking of you. It’s been a bit crazy here with school starting for the kids and myself beginning to teach at my 4 schools.

This year I am beginning to feel less like a newbie teacher at most of my schools–especially the college. I’ve actually had more opportunities to meet and and talk with professors and staff this month than all of last year.

Our Edmond’s Hebrew and Greek discussion club, while small, continues to thrive in a strange and beautiful way. The music component of this is carried by myself, Evan, and a CD player when we are not present.

Katie is in a show and having a great time being a dresser (not the furniture but someone who helps with costume changes and maintenance).

I’m glad you are getting comfortable with the terrain of your new place. It is also great to hear that you get to work in a library. You must be enjoying this.

Well I better put the rest of my kids to bed.

Safety and health to you and yours,

    ~Gordon
