what’s being offered (video)

·

This little John Eldredge video (from Walking With God) talks about having God vs. having understanding (the quote I posted two days ago.) I like the idea of shepherding our hearts. It's necessary to do so I think:

* John Eldredge gets pretty crazy with his hands in these videos. He's be a good rapper.
** FYI – He talks about falling off of a horse in this video. He was thrown from a horse and broke both of his arms and was pretty incapacitated for a while. That's discussed in detail in the book.

  1. Did you enjoy Wild At Heart? I’ve not read it yet, but a lot of my good (somewhat like-minded) male friends said Eldredge is a part of that manly man/testosterone/swinging pipe for Jesus movement (did I just say that?) within the church, and I’ve not really been able to identify with that movement as much.

I really liked the quote you had by him recently, but I was pretty surprised you were into his stuff. I’m interested in your thoughts.

  2. if i were you i would actually skip wild at heart and read one of his other books (either waking the dead or this book I’m reading walking with god.) this book is actually a lot more accessible i find than the others i’ve read by him. the others make you feel a little bit like if you aren’t base-jumping before breakfast or wrestling a grizzly into submission you might not be living out the manhood that god has for you. i don’t think that is eldredge’s intent at all, but that’s how it reads. what i like about waking the dead AND walking with god is this idea that we each have a “glory” that god planted in us that needs to be found, watered, and let flourish. he believes our “enemy” is out to squelch that glory and the joy that comes from really knowing god and walking with him in wholeness. he’s big on wholeness and “doing battle” with your life. some will say he is too “man-centered” but i like the psychological/spiritual aspect and perspective from which he is writing from. i think if you read his books with a somewhat “teachable” spirit and realizing that he is writing form a perspective that might be very different from your own you can glean good stuff from eldredge. that’s my take on it…

for another interesting perspective on “wild at heart” you should read don miller’s book “to own a dragon”. he says a couple things about john’s ideas and our woundedness.
