lazy saturday and blogjam

·

Busy work week for me, or I should say a busy work month. Before I left the office yesterday, I culled my inbox down to just under 1,000 emails. I normally like to have it at less than 100 so you begin to understand my current predicament. Too much work lately, but I’m thankful that I am employed.

Enjoying a very lazy Saturday at home with the family. No plans, no expectations. Rainy skies have a tendency to curb the motivation for outings, for me anyway.

When I have an agenda-free day like today it reminds me of my neglected blog. If I haven’t written in more than a month, I’m a little afraid that if I start it will be like punching a hole in a logjam of backed-up post ideas. The lumber will flood downstream with terminal velocity punching through anything in its path. More often than not this vision is enough to dissuade me–procrastination is an art. But the mounting pile-up is starting to get scary. So I’ll try to whittle each (b)log down to a small branch of information. Since last I posted…

  • The Odometer. I turned 36 years old. This no longer feels like an uphill climb. Is that good or bad?
  • Visited the EMP-SciFi museum with friends. How does putting hardback and paperback books on display count as a museum? Barnes and Noble does the same thing but they don’t charge you admission. Caveat: the EMP was a bit more impressive.
  • Waiting. Finished my applications for MFA programs. March is the month when I’ll hear back from SPU and Goucher.
  • Goddard‘s program starts in July. Let the writing begin!
  • Snow in every state but Hawaii. They got a tsunami…almost. Meanwhile, Seattle has had no snow this winter.
  • Addiction. Still off the junk, with no relapses, FB I mean. Can’t say that I’ve missed it too much.
  • My basketball team is looking good for March brackets. But they got beat today by Tenn. My friend Art is probably grinnin’.
  • Saw Rob Bell at the Moore and learned all about suffering and soap.
  • With the rest of the world, grieved over the earthquake victims in Haiti, and now Chile.
  • That’s why they call them “Killer” Whales. This must have been gruesome to see.
  • Ah, Spring Training and a re-vamped Mariner roster. Excited for summer.
  • Lost! Every Tuesday from 9-10, you know where I’ll be.
  • Olympics. Wouldn’t say I’m a die-hard Olympic fan, but Shaun White was inspiring. Did he get a meeting with Obama yet?
  • Cyclists. Both the girls are avid bike-riders now. No training wheels required. Anna even has pegs and will “tote” Sarah on the back.
  • Saw Avatar at the IMAX for my b-day. Wow. Kept thinking I’d already seen it (e.g. Dances With Wolves) but still couldn’t help being drawn into the movie magic and the visual artistry.
  • Resume writing. Mine is current, but I’ve also been writing / editing resumes for Christa and other friends. You never know when you’ll need one in this crazy economy.
  • Still Netflixing regularly and spending the first half-hour of my day with Jillian.
  • The Arts. Sarah is still hip-hopping and Anna is still singing.
  • The Prez. Christa is still working hard on her PTA responsibilities and her new role on the Guide Group at church.
  • Reading. Just finished a thought-provoking book, Nurture Shock, about our “unscientific” assumptions about child-rearing and development. Changed my view on sleep, praise, self-esteem, and some other hot topics. Highly recommend it.

Other than this, not much else has been going on. Well, it’s a start anyway. Flumes away!

  1. Definitely am grinning my friend. You know my blood runs orange. Speaking of which when are you headed back to your homeland? You know life is nicer with warm feet and sweet tea.
