The World According to Cage: #48: Grindhouse

·

This Quentin Tarantino / Richard Rodriguez double feature film (Grindhouse) homage to exploitation films of the 60s and 70s barely counts as a Nicolas Cage film. But it was on the WATC(H) list so I had to watch it.

Nicolas Cage only appears on screen, as Fu Manchu, for about 12 seconds in the R-rated trailer for the fictitious (never made film) Werewolf Women of the SS. You can watch the entire Rob Zombie trailer here but the title really says it all.

I did watch both of Nicolas-Cageless double features in Grindhouse, and the only thing I’ll say about them is that do a good job of capturing the stylistic violence, gore, sexuality, and absurdity of the stories from that time period. The grainy low-budget look of the cinematography, the psychedelic flashbacks and aural distortions, and the quick cuts all were true to the genre. If you like bad films is an arthouse interpretation that worth a viewing, but you need to know what you are getting into from the start. Just watch a trailer and you’ll probably be good. (Because I really like “bad movies” that are intended to be so, I enjoyed both of these features more than I probably should have. LOL.)

From the Cage perspective, this was really just a teaser cameo that perfectly fits his nouveau shamanic aesthetic. I wish there were some deleted scenes or a Rob Zombie music video that starred Cage as Fu Manchu.

Not much else to learn from this film though…

First for Nicolas Cage as Fu Manchu

  • Blatant cultural appropriation of an Asian Character
  • First time dressed up like Dr. Strange
  • Sporting a “fu manchu” style moustache

Recurrence

  • Laughing maniacally (Multiple)

Quotables

“THIS IS MY MECCA! AHAHAHAHAHA! AHAHAHAHA!”
