The World According to Cage #89: Love, Antosha

·

This film, Love, Antosha (2019) was a touching documentary detailing the life, acting career, and tragic passing of the Ukrainian American actor, Anton Yelchin.

Technically, this isn’t a Nicolas Cage film at all and therefore probably shouldn’t be included in the WATC(H), but since Mr. Cage narrated a few parts of it, I decided to go ahead and watch it. It was worth the watch. Anton was a very talented, young but accomplished actor whom I enjoyed ins roles such as Chekhov in the new Star Trek series and oddball films like Odd Thomas. Had he not died at such a young age, in such a weird freak accident (i.e. he got crushed between his own vehicle and a closed gate at his residence) he may have made even more films than the prolific Nicolas Cage himself.

Since this documentary was a tribute to the actor’s life and work, it didn’t seem right for me to analyze the film (to try to gain insights from it) or document the best Cage “quotes” or moments in this one. In fact, Cage doesn’t ever show his face and there really weren’t any Cage-specific quotes. He spoke a few choice lines from Anton’s journal entries. Anything, read first person from Anton’s perspective was read by Cage.

This seemed a bit odd to me, but maybe the two were closer than we knew from the public eye. They did co-star together in Dying of The Light (2014) and that must have made an impression on them both.

Rest in power, Anton. The world will miss you and your art.
